Born in Chesapeake, Virginia in 1975, Brett Amory is descended from a long line of visual artists and musicians. He studied at the Academy of Art from which he received a BFA in Fine Art in 2005 and was recipient of two major awards given by the school: The Student Choice Award for 2004 and Second Prize in landscape painting for 2003. He is the recipient of a gold medal from Online Artists Interviews, an international juried art competition (2009). He graduated from the Academy of Arts in 2005. Brett began working on the painting series entitled “Waiting” in 2001. The series depicts the urban individual’s yearning for presence and the seeming impossibility of attaining it. The paintings portray commuters in transit immersed in either a quiet, even hopeful state or, alternately, an anguish of unfulfilled anticipation.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Waiting”
The painting series entitled “Waiting” depicts the urban individual’s yearning for presence and the seeming impossibility of attaining it. The paintings portray commuters in transit immersed in either a quiet, even hopeful state or, alternately, an anguish of unfulfilled anticipation.

At first, the series, begun in 2001, depicted travelers waiting underground. But as the paintings evolved, the people ceased to be exclusively travelers, and began to emphasize figures selected from anonymous snaphots of city streets. Although the experience of waiting remains, the perception of it has changed from one of mundane task to one leavened with transcendence.

The series has also charted the evolution of an artist—the reductive elements of the compositions provide an outward echo of the inner states of the figures. By reducing the elements of the painting as far as possible, a frozen moment is extended.

Lastly, I have developed favored motifs in the series, a kind of visual music, such as repetition of a human image, to show not only the passage of time but of the human being through it.

Thinkspace is pleased to present There It Is, an exhibition of new works from three Oakland, CA based artists that explore the urban aesthetic from three distinctly different points of view. From the observational based oil paintings of Brett Amory to the history drenched collage styled oil paintings of Adam Caldwell through to the surreal bent on the world around us as seen through the eyes of oil painter Seth Armstrong, There It Is offers up a painterly tour de force that is a great way to kick off our 2011 program.

Also showing concurrently in our project room will be Happy Valley, an exhibition of new works from Ireland based artist Paul Barnes in what will be his first major solo exhibition in the States following numerous group show appearances with our gallery over the past few years.

We are excited and really happy to welcome Brett Amory and Dave Singley as new Art Battery Group Artists. Brett is based in San Francisco, CA and Dave currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Our collective is now formed by 15 artists and hopefully growing soon, with more talented emerging artists that believe our online home can help them to promote their work and to find new ways to collaborate with other artists.

As a team we look forward for the opportunity to create more spaces to ignite this creative spark and generate good and productive discussion about emerging art.

Cheers!
Claudia Sandoval + Alfonso Nieto

Brett Amory was born June 25, 1975 in Portsmouth, Virginia. His father, Harry Amory, was a mechanic at a shipyard. His mother, Sally Roebuck, was a nurse. Brett has two brothers, Chad and Jonathan.

When he was 21 Brett moved to San Francisco to study motion pictures at the Academy of Arts. Soon after enrolling in school, Brett took his first drawing class and was introduced to his passion for the arts. Around the time Brett turned 24 he tried his hand in painting. In 2002 Brett switched his major to fine art and started his first body of work called “Waiting” a series of paintings about the anticipation of the next moment.

Brett graduated from the Academy of Arts in 2005 and has shown his work all over the country. In 2006 Brett along with five other artist published a book called “Convergence” and had book signings in New York, La and at the SFMOMA in San Francisco. Brett Currently works as a graphic designer at an environmental company in San Francisco and continues to show his work in galleries across the country.

Dave Singley lurks in BK and remembers his life while getting wrapped up in tons of art for art’s sake projects.

He left UC Santa Cruz as a painter in 2003 with a wealth of new mon frères to call friends and collaborators. Many ventures were launched as a result, but most failed to penetrate the stratosphere, with the exception of some of the group shows in California that represented DS and friends as FUN ARTISTS. He continues to work from the mean streets of the East Coast with the Lubin Brothers on Famous Class, a music collective that is welcoming Nurturer to it’s family. Nurturer is taking up a lot of space in my head says DS about his 2 piece band with the Woodman. The Woodman is also helping to co – pilot the newest loose structure collective called Tons Of Sons, a home for the wild ideas of DS and his mon frères.
